A Note About Holidays and Curriculum
At Small Faces we:
  • Honor cultural diversity in our children and our community.
  • Avoid focusing curriculum on holiday activities that reflect the dominant culture of our society.
  • Respect and celebrate a variety of holidays in our classrooms.
  • Prior to celebrations or holiday activities teachers will ask themselves what the goals are in doing this holiday presentation.
  • We don’t allow the holidays to become the focus of curriculum, recognizing that special events in isolation can reinforce stereotypes rather than challenge them.
  • Give all holidays celebrated by the program’s staff and families equal importance.
  • Celebrate holidays that are relevant to the children enrolled in the program and seek parents’ help in planning accurate celebrations.
  • Give children accurate accounts of historical events and reasons for the holiday celebrations.
  • Are sensitive to and teach the children that there are groups of people who do not observe Halloween, Christmas and other holidays that are traditionally celebrated by those in the dominant culture in Seattle.
  • Make children who do not celebrate a particular holiday welcome guests at our celebrations.
  • Plan for alternatives to holiday celebrations so that children who cannot participate in holiday celebrations because of religious beliefs will not be excluded.
